Description

Ingredients

  • 6 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and sugar. Cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
  4. Add broth, wine, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to broil.
  6. Toast baguette slices until golden.
  7. Serve soup in bowls, place toasted bread on top, and sprinkle with cheese.
  8. Broil until cheese is bubbly and golden.
